The Borovets conference (2002)
The spirit of the conference
The Borovets conference turned conversation between colleagues into shared clinical reference points: three professional consensus statements, giving guidance for assessment, treatment and management, were adopted there. In the same period, the question of European certification of psychotherapists was also raised.
Programme highlights
- Consensus on dementias — definition, classification (ICD-9, ICD-10 and by cause) and pharmacological treatment strategies, including for behavioural and psychological symptoms.
- Consensus statement on the recommended approach to the treatment of addictions, adopted on 9 June 2002 — addiction as a chronic, relapsing disorder of bio-psycho-social origin; multimodal treatment led by a psychiatrist; an individual treatment plan and a minimum duration of three months.
- Consensus statement on the care and treatment of patients with dangerous behaviour — expert risk assessment, prevention and the legal framework for compulsory and involuntary treatment.
